Effect of nitrogen application timings on growth, Yield and nitrogen uptake of rice under different cultivation methods subjected to alternate wetting and drying irrigation

AbstractClimate and land use change are responsible for causing in water scarcity in rice production. Water-saving technologies are the solution of this problem. This technology requires integrated management with variety and N fertilizer. The objective of this research was to assess growth, yield and N uptake of rice under different N application timings, cultivation methods and varieties. This research was conducted in the greenhouse. Pots were arranged in a completely randomized design. The experiment was composed of three factors; i) timing application of nitrogen (T1 = 100 % basal, T2 = 75 % basal + 25 % at active tillering, T3 = 50 % basal + 25 % at active tillering + 25 % at panicle initiation, T4 = 25 % basal + 25 % at active tillering + 25 % at panicle initiation + 25 % at flowering), ii) cultivation method (C1= transplanting, C2 = wet-direct seeding, C3 = dry-direct seeding), iii) variety (V1 = Pathumthani 1, V2 = RD 57). Parameters measured in this research were plant growth, yield components, and N uptake. Splitting of N application resulted in higher yield than 100% basal and T3 provided the highest yield (37.6 g/plant). Three-way interactions were significant on three variables; (i) shoot dry matter with the combination of dry-direct seeding, T2 and RD 57 resulted in the highest biomass (42.6 g), (ii) straw N content with the combination dry-direct seeding, T1 and Pathumthani 1 had the highest (0.63) and (iii) grain N content with the combination dry-direct seeding, T4 and Pathumtani 1 had 1.32.
