AbstractThe food deficiency of the country can be minimized by efficient use of deep tubewells. BADC deep tubewell program in North Western Region of Bangladesh is discussed in detail. It is found that the small farmers are not in a position to run the deep tubewells efficiently under the present socio-economic political framework. This is due to poor and improper performance of the management committee of irrigation or tubewell group. New types of village leadership suitable to involve common farmers should be developed, Use of water under the deep tubewell command area must be made compulsory. There is a lack of co-ordination between the different organizations working with a deep tubewell which should be improved. In addition to this, on the basis of analysis, some recommendations are proposed for proper utilization of deep tubewells.
