Abstract | Two codes to solve an initial value problem involving a system of six coupled partial differential equations are compared. Such problems arise in various fields of science and engineering, and the two codes represent alternative approaches. The first (VISCODE) is a special purpose implicit finite difference implementation of traditional type; and the second (PDECODE) exploits existing general purpose software for ordinary differential equations , via the method of lines implemented in the package PDECOL. The second code took much less effort to construct, is rather more flexible for the user, and is of comparable efficiency. |
