Abstract | Automatic control is widely used today. Most automatic control systems incorporate a controller (or controllers) built into them. How well the automatic controller performs depends mainly on how well the controller has been tuned. In the real production plants where automatic controllers are indispensable, learning the controllers and adjusting their (P, I or D) settings are important tasks. This study presents a 11 simulation approach 11 to controller tuning. The method discussed is general and can be applied to various cases. First, the basic control principles concerning the controller are studied, then a simulation approach using the CSMP-III simulation program is introduced to study the controller actions and to find the optimum settings by the empirical loop-tuning method. The simulations of a simple liquid level feed-back control, a cascade liquid level control and a simple liquid level feed-forward control are included for illustration purposes. |
