Abstract | The continuing technology innovations occurring in the developed countries have had significant adverse impacts on the demand for most primary product which usually contribute a high proportion of foreign exchange in most developing countries. One of such primary product is natural rubber. The serious competitor of natural rubber is synthetic rubber which is made from crude oil. This study attempts to analyze the rate at which the demand for natural rubber has been eroded as synthetic rubber technology diffused in developed countries, during the period 1971 to 1985. Two static models of technological substitution are conducted to assist in this analysis. Moreover, to incorporate the effect of oil prices on the rate of substitution of natural rubber by synthetic rubber, modification of dynamic model as an extension of a generalized model is carried out using system dynamics. |
