Abstract | A field experiment was conducted on the sandy loam soil of the volcanic ash of Merapi volcano to investigate the effect of monoculture and inter cropping on soil erosion. The experiment was carried out in Yogyakarta, Indonesia during the rainy season of 1980-81. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replicates. A regression analysis and analysis of variance were employed to compare the difference between the treatments. Intercropping of rice & peanut and intercropping of rice & soybean were effective in reducing erosion and run-off, The intercropping of rice & maize was the only one which showed higher erosion and run-off than the monoculture of rice. The highest erosion and run-off was found in the bare soil. Within the intercropping systems, the intercropping of rice & peanut showed the lowest and the intercropping of rice & maize showed the highest erosion and run-off. The erosion and run-off in the intercropping of rice & peanut were 8. 4 ton ha-1 (O. 6 mm of soil). and 97 mm, respectively. The monoculture of rice produced 13. 0 ton ha-1 of erosion ยท.and 169 mm of run-off, The erosion and run-off from the bare soil were 29.8 ton ha-1 (2.3 mm of soil) and 241 mm, respectively. |
