Abstract | The present thesis reports water drainage effects at later tillering on paddy yield and nutrient availability in low land soil in the Red River Delta, VIET-NAM. The 3-season experiments (1978-1980) indicated that with 10-20 t farm yard manure/ha, slight and heavy drainage enriched the root zone with available N, P and K and thus increased rice grain yield by 0.27-0.50 t/ha and 0.31-0.66 t/ha, respectively, and increased water use efficiency compared with that of continuous flooding. Drainage at late tillering prevented excessive vegetative growth and regulated competition for assimilates between vegetative and reproductive organs of rice plants at the beginning of the reproductive phase, resulting in a favourable condition for rice grain yield formation. But, if no basal fertilizers are used drainage even was harmful as rice grain yield was significantly reduced compared with continuous flooding. |
