Abstract | Entrance resistances and effective radii of drain pipes without envelope and with six different prewrapped envelopes were evaluated in a sand tank experiment. With a K-value of the sand of 22.0 m/day, the entrance resistance of the naked pipe was 0,0136 days/m. The enveloped drain pipes gave entrance resistances of 0.0024 to 0.0067 days/m of which the four sheet type envelopes have the values 0.0036 to 0.0067 days/m. These values are high compared to the two voluminous types about 1 cm thickness, entrance resistance values of 0.0024 and 0.0025 days/m were found. Assuming a field K-value of 0.50 m/day, all the enveloped pipes could be classified as very good. The voluminous type of envelopes. gave higher quantity of sand washed into the pipe (587 to 827 gm/m) compared to sheet types (215 to 459 gm/m). The effective radii of 0.47, 1.44 and 2.5 cm were found for naked, fibertex sheet I and coco fibre, respectively. These were used in three steady state drainage equations instead of the actual drain radius to evaluate the effect on the drain spacing in a homogeneous soil. All the equations showed an increase in drain spacing by using enveloped pipes compared to the naked pipe. |
