AbstractA locally manufactured power tiller was tested for the evaluation of field performance, Axle power was measured using a brake drum assembly. Throttle was adjusted to have a constant engine speed of 2200 rpm. At the same throttle setting, maximum axle power was 4.74 KW at an engine speed of 1913 rpm. Field tests were conducted with a chisel plow. A depth control device was used to maintain the constant depth of plowing, In the field tests seven variables were measured, namely, depth of plowing, horizontal and vertical forces on plow, moment in the plane of these two forces, wheel rotational speed, forward ground speed and slip, An octagonal ring transducer was used to measure the forces and moment. Speed sensor and slip circuits were used to measure the speeds and slip respectively. Tests were conducted at different moisture levels with tire wheels and cage wheels. Maximum values of tractive efficiency, transmitted power and coefficient of traction are 52,8%, 2.0 KW and 0.7 respectively at 21.1% moisture content (dry basis) with cage wheels, and 46.4%, 1.74 KW and ,58 respectively at 19.3% moisture content (db) with tire wheels. These values are low compared to four wheel (2-wheel drive) tractors. Maximum values of tractive efficiency, transmitted power and coefficient of traction were found to be decreasing with increased moisture level. Slip at maximum tractive efficiently is higher than four wheel tractors. Overall performance of tiller with cage wheels is better than with tire wheels.
