AbstractThe field performance tests were performed on a 2-row Kubota rice transplanter. The soil-bearing seedlings were prepared by non-frame type method. By having 3 variations of seedling heights (15 cm, 20 cm and 25 cm), 4 variations of water depths (0-1 cm, 2-4 cm, 5-7 cm and 8-10 cm), 2 machine speeds in standard soil conditions (customary soil preparation method),the results showed that the transplanter worked best by using 20 cm - 25 cm height of seedlings in 2-7 cm depth of water at high gear (half throttle setting). The field capacity of the transplanter was measured to be 0.08 ha/hr with the field efficiency of 65.2%. By using the transplanter instead of manual labour the labour requirement (including seedling preparation) can be reduced by about 74.7%. The fuel consumption was measured to be 3.77 litre/ha. At present wage level transplanting by machine has a break even level at 9.97 ha for single cropping and 4.98 ha for double cropping per year to that of hand transplanting.
