AbstractStorage of paddy in a traditional bamboo bin and two ferrocement bins of conical and cylindrical shape was studied. Each bin had a storage capacity of 0,5 ton, All the three bins were filled with paddy having an initial moisture content of approximately 11 . 5% w.b . and kept in the open ground for a period of 120 days. During the storage period ambient temperature, temperatures at the top, middle and bottom center of each bin were recorded every hour. Changes in the quality of stored paddy were evaluated in terms of moisture content, bulk density, germination, milling yield and breakage strength parameters. It was found that the physical condition of the paddy was influenced most in the ferrocement bins, resulting in higher moisture differences and reduced milling yield in the top, bottom and peripheral regions. The paddy in the bamboo bin appeared to be of better quality as compared to the ferrocement bins. This study showed that for safe storage of paddy ferrocement bins should not be exposed to direct sun and rain which creates a higher temperature difference between the inside and the outside of the bin causing moisture migration .
