AbstractIn almost every diesel engine a governor is employed to regulate the engine speed under different load conditions. Generally in the tractor diesel engines mechanical governors are used. In this research an electrical governor was .developed for tractor engine using microprocessor as a decision making and controlling device. The software for microprocessor was developed and the required hardware was made. Engine speed was sensed by magnetic electronic sensor. The speed was the only parameter used by the microprocessor for making decision. A control system consisting of a control circuit and a control mechanism was designed and constructed, which adjusts the speed by changing the fuel supply according to the orders issued by the microprocessor in every engine revolution. In control mechanism a 12 volts DC motor was used which rotates in both clockwise and anticlockwise directions . The motor through its gear train drives a rack and pinion system attached at the output shaft of the motor. The rack was attached at the end of a shaft which controls the fuel supply through a fork attached with the fuel control rack of the fuel injection pump. The new system and the original system were tested to compare the performance of the engine. The result showed that response in electrical system was quick and the power output was also high. However the fuel consumption in electrical system was little higher than original mechanical system.
