AbstractThis thesis presents the development of a portable Database Management System (DBMS). The facilities provided are suitable for most organizations using small computers. The DBMS is based on a relational data model using relational algebra as the query language. The programs written in standard FORTRAN IV language were tested on an IBM 3031 computer under the VM/CMS operating system. The work is divided into two parts: viz. design involving the file structures and storage management, and software implementation. The file system is designed for a multi-user environment, and the main purpose is to support the query facilities to allow further expansion of the system to support more advanced facilities. The implementation is limited to the interactive user interface, but the underlying subroutines could readily be used interface, but the underlying subroutines could readily be used by any application program interface. Emphasis is on portability, ease of use, and software engineering (involving top-down design, coding, testing and structured programming to ensure ease of maintenance of the programs).
