AbstractThis thesis describes the implementation of a query translator f or a relational database. It is based on a data sublanguage called SEQULL which is relationally complete and yet avoids the universal quantifiers and bound variables required by languages based on the relational calculus. The translator is designed to minimize the data accessing operations required to respond to an arbitrary query. The algorithms and data structures designed f or this purpose are described. The system is implemented in PL/1. The facilities of t h e query language implemented is introduced by a series of example queries and described in more detail by a syntax. Tests with about 20 example queries using a database dealing with a hypothetical example of suppliers, parts and orders are presented.
