AbstractThis thesis provides a comparative appraisal of certain computer algorithms for time dependent, one dimensional partial differential equations (PDE). Two available numerical codes for PDE are evaluated and compared on the basis of how well they solve a set of PDE of varying characteristics under a variety of options available. These codes PDEONE/LSODE and PDECOL implement three point finite difference and collocation methods respectively. They were installed on the AIT Regional Computer Center IBM 3031 for performance testing. The results show that PDECOL performs better than PDEONE/LSODE in terms of solution cost, including computer time and storage, and its ability to produce solutions at various tolerances using a variety of collocation orders. In particular, the average solution cost for PDEONE/ LSODE is significantly larger than for PDECOL. A User Guide to the codes is included.
