This study shows the different value addition strategies used by processors in Darjeeling district. The population of tea estates in Darjeeling is 87. The sample size was calculated using Yamane formula and the estates were selected for survey by random sampling method. The survey was conducted for 51 tea estates. The objective of the study was to assess the prevailing value addition processes in the tea estates in Darjeeling district, India. The research was conducted in Darjeeling district during November, 2018 to January 2019 and 51 tea processing estates were interviewed in the form of detailed questionnaire to evaluate existing value chain in tea industry of Darjeeling, India. Moreover, the study suggests what are barriers in development of green tea value chain and how the performance of value chain can be improved. The findings show that 55% of the respondents do not process any value-added products from green tea. The quantity of processed green tea in only 20-30% of the total tea processed in one season. This is due to the less demand of green tea in domestic market. In export market the demand of CTC is higher than green tea because most of the green tea export market is covered by China. There is a high competition in Darjeeling itself. Also, the factors are analysed in this study using factor analysis method which influence the performance of green tea value chain. |
