AbstractMany farmers in Maharashtra grow okra under contract farming. It has potential benefits for both farmers and agribusiness firms. The farmers receive inputs, extension services, packaging material, procurement at farm gate, soil testing, field visits by officers. While agribusiness firm get quality produces. There were some problems of farmers, inefficiency of participating in market economy, supply chain and getting price stability and technical knowledge, unavailability of labours, lack of transparency in case of pesticide spray and lack of trust about company. This study aims to analyse the perception about contract farming, adoption level of practices and determine factors influencing farmers’ participation in contract farming. A total of 206 farmers belonging to contract and non-contract were selected from Pune and Satara districts. The weighted average index is used to analyse perception and adoption level of practices. While binary logit regression was used for determining factors influencing farmers participation in contract farming. The result showed that contract farmers had very strong level of perception for formal contract, fair price, assured market, fixed income, payment schedule, method of payment, higher production, better pest management , guidance of growing, input, packaging material, procurement at farm gate, field visits and non-contract farmers had very strong level of perception for payment schedule, method of payment, input, packaging material, procurement at farm gate, strict quality requirement. The adoption level of practices, contract farmers had very strong adoption for organic manure, Samrat, Mahico, trap crop, yellow sticky trap, pheromone trap, resistant varities, harvest on day of shipment and non-contract farmers had very strong adoption of trap crop, resistant varities, harvest on day of shipment. The factors like gender, landholding, labour availability, fair price, extension service, irrigation system had positive influence on farmers participation in contract farming while strict quality requirement, breach of contract and occupation had negative influence on participation in contract farming. The participation in contract farming can increase by considering the factors influencing farmers participation.
