Abstract | Grape occupies a prime place in Indian economy and has emerged as the highest foreign exchange earning fruit crop. India is a leading producer and exporter of grapes in world. In India, Maharashtra state is a leading producer and exporter of grapes. International trade in table grapes has expanded tremendously over the last few decades, with out-of-season fresh produce now being traded and consumed globally. Trade intensification has been driven by emerging traders who have changed the economic geography of table grape production. Improving competitiveness in global markets is a driving objective for entrepreneurs and policy makers. Hence, this study is one step ahead in market led extension and was planned to study the opportunities and challenges of grape exports by India farmers. Totally 120 farmers and 120 exporters were purposively selected for the study. The data were collected from the respondent by using questionnaire and were scored, tabulated and analyzed by suitable statistical tools. The results indicated that, majority of the respondents had knowledge about preproduction procedure for export; most of them had knowledge about quality production for the grape export and had low knowledge about post-harvest practices for export. Production practices like girdling (0.34), thinning (0.56), hormone management (0.56), nutrient management (0.58), water management (0.57), disease and pest management (0.60) practices to meet export standards were adopted by majority of the respondents. According to farmers meeting quality standards (0.83) and to test maximum residue level (0.74) was the major problem for certification. Use of gibberellic acid (0.82), use of CPPU (0.72), use of paper wrapping (0.77), use of chemical according to their residue period (0.78) was some of the difficult production practices to adopt. Information about market (0.82), government policies (0.91), availability of infrastructure (0.80), Availability of skilled labor (0.76) and high labor wages (0.61) are problems while exporting. Lack of knowledge about quality standards (0.91), safety standards according to GlobalGAP (0.85), checking pesticide residue level (0.82) and lack of market information (0.76) are the exporters’ perception regarding farmers to meet export standards. The major constraints faced by export firm in grapes export was difficult to meet export standards, Non availability of quality testing laboratories, fluctuating prices in international market are major problem, non-availability of skilled labor, and non-availability of updated market information. |
