Abstract | The Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) system consisting of closely spaced disks has shown great promise as a biological nitrification process. This study was conducted on upgrading an .activated sludge plant with rotating biological contactors incorporated in its aeration tanks, in this case called SURFACT process. A single, fundamental model of biological kinetics (Monad's type equation) is shown to be capable of accurately predicting the performance of a bench-scale SURFACT process for COD removal and nitrification. SURFACT and the conventional activated sludge process behave similarly; it means that the microorganisms on the disks perform the same work as those in suspension. Therefore the Monad's model, which is based on fundamental and independently obtainable parameters of bacterial kinetics and limiting substrate, can help suggest useful process and indicate that the application of RBC units to an existing activated sludge plant can achieve the purposes of upgrading and nitrification. A series of COD removal and nitrification experiments using a completely mixed batch reactor was carried out to verify the proposed model. A high ammonia content sludge supernatant was used as the source of wastewater. Experimental variables were MLSS concentration, and influent substrate concentration. |
