AbstractThis study investigated the removal efficiency of bacteriophages (a viral indicator) when treated with anaerobic puflow filter (AUF) at various hydraulic detention times and organic loadings: Two units were used, each consists of a septic tank and an AUF. The AUF were operated at four different detention time (8AUF) 24 hr; 48 hr; 72 hr and 96 hr; the organic loading to AUF ranged from 0.04 to 0.31 kg COD/m -day. The obtained results showed that an increase in the 8AUF caused an increase in the per cent reduction of phage and of coliform. At the 8AUF of 1 day the average per cent reduction of phage in AUF 1 and AUF 2 were 40.65% and 44.67% respectively. In both AUF, the average per cent reduction of phage was greatest (more than 80%) at the 0 AUF of 4 days There was not direct relationship between the organic loading and viral removal in the AUF, but at the same e UF' per cent reduction of bacteriophages is higher with lower level of organic loading to AUF.
