AbstractEnergy crisis is serious, hard to rationalize or simplify. In a mix of variegated energy sources, many of which are yet to be harnessed and developed. Utilization of organic inputs such as plant wastes and nigh soil mixtures is of great possibility for methane production. This research of biogas production was conducted in three phases. In the first phase of this study, it was found that Sorghum, water hyacinth and nigh soil mixture produced the highest amount of biogas which was 243.1 liters at a 30 day digestion period. In the second phase, the effect of loading rate and retention time of the digester were evaluated for optimum biogas production in a semicontiguous process. The highest gas production was observed at 45 day detention time. In addition, it was found that detention time which controlled the frequency of the draw and fill operation of the system is an important parameter to be considered for anaerobic digestion. Consequently, the effect of pretreatment of plant wastes before mixing with nigh soil for biogas production was undertaken in the last phase. Results of the experiment showed that 43% increased in biogas production when plant wastes was pretreated for 20 days instead of 10 days.
