AbstractThe long term secondary or creep settlement behaviour of an embankment constructed at AIT, Bangkok, was investigated by using POULOS et al's method. The solution proposed by FOX was used for estimating the stress distribution caused by the embankment. Laboratory triaxial tests were carried out in an attempt to simulate the field stress conditions before and after the construction of the embankment. The calculated values of the immediate and consolidation settlements, the rate of consolidation and creep settlements were used to obtain complete time-settlement curve. The method suggested by Terzaghi and Gilboy was applied to make correction for the construction period. The results of calculations based on laboratory tests were compared with those obtained in the field. The agreement was quite good with respect to ultimate settlement and creep settlement rate but poor with respect to the rate of consolidation.
