AbstractThe study dealt with the determination of the impact on bus movements and on passenger car traffic o f with-flow bus lanes in Bangkok on three major radial arterials--Sukhumvit, Phaholyothin, and Phet Kasem Roads--and on two important streets in the central city: Yaowarat a nd Charoen Krung Roads. The license plate technique and classified traffic flow counts were used to collect the field data which comprised bus and car travel time, a nd traffic flow and composition. It was found th.at the implementation of with-flow bus lanes had a positive impact on the level of service of the operation of buses, and generally did not affect adversely the level of service of other traffic. An economic evaluation of passenger travel time by both bus and car indicated benefits in most instances of bus lane operation. Bus lane regulations were found to be violated in some instances, and the effectiveness of the bus lanes was accordingly diminished.
