| Abstract | Objectives of this research were to study the effects of the 250-km Kaeng Koi-Bua Yai cut-off on railway service in the Northeastern Region of Thailand and on development of the area traversed. Comparisons were made o f train operation on the cut-off and on the Karat main line with regard to travel time and fuel consumption . Train traffic volumes and traffic pattern s, and passenger and freight traffic, were analyzed. Study of effects on development of the area traversed dealt with analysis o f population changes of area located along the cut-off, compared to the area located along the Korat Line, a nd with analysis of agricultural changes o f Changwat Chaiyaphum which is traversed by the cut-off. Freight trains operating on the cut-off from Kaeng Koi to Bua Yai can save fuel, while those operating on the Karat main line can save travel time. Inauguration o f the Suran arai-Lamnarai segment of the railway in fiscal year 1962, and of the Lamnarai-Bua Yai segment in fiscal year 1967, each resulted in increased passager traffic on the cut-off. During 1960 to 1972, most passenger trips on the cut-off were local trips of lengths from 30 to 60 kilometres. From 1969 to 1979, the main freight transported on the cut-off was originating tonnage. Variations of tonnage of either originating or delivered freight the cut-off clearly reflected variations of tonnage originating or consigned to the Ban Chong Tai station near the site of a large cement mill. Inauguration of the Lamnarai- Bua Yai segment in 1967 did not significantly affect population growth in t he region , nor did it affect the planted area of maize, cassava, nor kenaf in Changwat Chaiyaphum which is traversed by the cut-off railway line. |
