AbstractThe "population explosion" in most of the big cities of the Third World is one of the major problem. The situation in most of such cities is becoming grim as their population increase does not correspond with the economic growth . The problem is very commonly attribute d as the consequence of rapid industrialization at few centres. Pakistan, like other developing countries is also facing the same problem. Especially Karachi, with the only sea port and concentration of industries, has become the "popular destination" for the rural migrants. Migration is a complex process, it not only affects city ' s demographic equilibrium but countryside also suffers the absentism of labour force . It involves economic , social, and cultural integration of the rural population to urban life. This research is an attempt to find out t he reasons under which the migrants are forced to abandon their native establishments. It also explores that after migration how the new-comers act in the city. The study inquires the way migrants are using the city's resources and institutions , i.e ., are they really utilizing t he resources for improving income, education, skills etc., or the migrants have only come to the city for enjoying the city life and comforts . The findings of the study provide encouraging features . The group of migrants (people from Hazara in Karchi) have shown a consider able progress in the city. They no more , are dependent on the village as most of them remit money to the dependents back-home . Their education, income and skills have improve d . Above all majority of the migrants have expressed that in the city the chances of economic development have been instrumental in their own development.
