AbstractThe study focusses on the linkages between a market town and its hinterland in one of the towns of Pakistan. Like anywhere else in Pakistan, market towns are considered important growth centers which integrate the national economy and play a vital role between the urban and rural sectors . For the socio-economic development the import ant spatial aspects are still imperfectly understood. Thus it was necessary to investigate into the spatial linkages or a representative market town Jaranwala. In order to gather such information, three types of surveys viz; market, octroi and village are utilized . The framework of the study is mainly based on the concepts given by Rondinelli and E .J. Johns on. Analysis and description of the variables have been undertaken in the t own and hinterland separately. In both cases, key variables like distance , time and frequency of visit and other characteristics of respondents have been used in order to get a total picture . The findings reveal that the local market of Jaranwala town establishes strong socio-economic to its hinterland which are inversely proportional to the distance upto 18 miles. other linkages like technological , recreationally land administrative do exist, but they are not strong and on the basis of distance they do not hold good for the inverse proportional law due to the variation. of existing physical linkages. In addition to these linkages within the sub district the agricultural market establish a wider range of influence, extended upto other districts specifically for economic linkages through the city traders. This has proved the strong vertical and horizontal linkages well established by the market town. The degree of efficiency of these linkages in terms of frequency of visits and consumed marketing time, was found varying on the basis of different positions of physical links to the town. Instead of crowding social and economic facilities at such few places, it has been recommended according to the basic need of the people that the Qasba markets and Markaz development should be spatially dispersed so as to effectively integrate the rural hinterland with centers of economic and social activities. similar studies on the CM S spatial aspects in other parts of the country will prevent further deterioration in the standard of socio-economic activities particularly in the rural areas of Pakistan.
