AbstractThis study is concerned with the analysis of the production scheduling problem of a sanitary ware manufacturing company. The production system under study consists of three main ' stages that is, cast shop, spray department and kiln department. This study concentrates in the modelling and analysis of the kiln department which is the final stage and the bottleneck of the production system. The general objective of the study is to develop a model from which a better production scheduling plan could be developed. The objective function of the model is to maximize operating profit (ex-factory) under market conditions of excess demand. The model developed with the main assumption of constant kiln firing cycle time is of a combinatorial nature. It is simplified to a manageable dimension by classifying the products for the purpose of analysis and practical application. The Mixed Integer mathematical progranuning package (MIP/370) is used for evaluation of this model. The results obtained by the model are compared with the existing intuitive way of scheduling and is shown that it will be fruitful to use this model to fulfill the company objectives. Sensitivity analysis for parametric changes of kiln firing cycle time is included in the study. The details of arriving at a managerial decision from the results derived, taking into consideration of the total company operating profit, concludes the study.
