AbstractThis research study is concerned with the demand forecast and the development of heuristic rules for determining a multiproduct, multiperiod and economic lot size production planning of the critical stage (printing stage) in a cap company. The company selected has about 150 products to be produced. One hundred and two products are forecasted for the next 12 monthly demands of each product. The applied time series analysis and projection forecasting techniques are Winters. Method, exponential method, simple average method and least square method. These methods are formulated with seasonal and trend effects according to the major products demand pattern. The printing stage production planning is first solved, product by product, by the extension of Wagner and within dynamic version algorithm. Each product's initial inventory effects are also analyzed as examples. Then these products are scheduled for the aggregate mid-range production plan by heuristic rules. The optimal solution of the printing stage production planning can be exactly solved for a 24 hour machine capacity per day plan due to the nature of non machine capacity and non inventory capacity constrain t s. Whereas a near optimal solution is obtained for a 16 hour machine capacity per day plan with fulfilment of machine capacity constraints. Finally, these plans ace compared.
