AbstractDuring rainy season, the flood superposes the tides in the lower Chao Phraya basin. The basin is relatively flat to retain water for quite a long period. The duration of flood which will affect directly or indirectly the social activities as well as business transactions of the areas should neither be overlooked nor neglected. A mathematical model is developed in the present study using the finite difference approximation to simulate the superposition of the flood and tides in the lower Chao Phraya basin. It can be also used as a mean of forecasting flood. At the same time, the reach of tidal effect is investigated to present the relations among the river discharge, water depth and velocity . They are strongly affected by the river discharge. The transition flow before the berms are completely inundated is studied by applying the dam-break technique. The overflowing and returning of flow are also investigated using De Marchi and Honma equations. They cause the variations of water surface elevation to quite an extent.
