Abstract | A small tobacco curing system using only solar energy was designed and constructed. The experimental model had a 5.49 m2 flat plate solar air heater, a 1.2 x 1.2 x 3.6 m3 brick barn, and a 1.37 m3 thermal storage rock bed, The system was designed for using in fine weather during the winter months, Preliminary investigations during poor weather in summer showed that, as expected, natural convection could not produce sufficient circulation of heated air through the rock bed, and that a fan would be needed. During day-time the average temperatures inside the barn were from 36 °c to 43 °c. |
