AbstractThe intention in this thesis is to analyze the application of probabilistic techniques to the stability and deformation problems of excavation in soft Bangkok clay. The soil parameters were determined from a variety of tests done on the samples taken from Nong Ngoo Hao where the trial excavation was done. The stress-strain relationship obtained from the triaxial ex tension unloading test results, was represented by a polynomial regression model which incorporated in the non-linear analysis to obtain the modulus value at any stress level. Statistical parameters of strength characteristics of the subsoil profile of the site were used in the evaluation of stability and deformation. The statistical evaluation of stability and deformation characteristics were performed. Mean values have a very good agreement with the results from corresponding deterministic analysis and the coefficient of variations are dependent on uncertainties involved. The coefficient of variation of the displacement in the vertical and horizontal directions were studied. The distribution of factor of safety was also studied and the relationship between the probability of failure and the factor of safety is established.
