AbstractA computer based economic investigation of the surface types and maintenance policies of the Ban Bung - Ban Khai feeder road in Thailand was performed by using the HDM Model. The Model was used to explore the most suitable maintenance policy, and it was found that a responsive maintenance policy would produce the minimum transportation cost. The section of the road between Ban Bung and Route 331 is paved with asphaltic concrete, and this was compared with double bituminous surface treated. Results show that the asphaltic concrete surface would be more economical. The possibility of reducing pavement thickness was explored, and the results showed the originally designed pavement to be preferable. Further Model runs for changes in growth rates, and increases in maintenance and vehicle operating costs were performed. In all Model runs, two deterioration Models (TRRL and AASHO) were used and their results compared. Recommendations were made for further work to determine the application of a suitable deterioration model for Thailand and on the practical aspects involved in responsive maintenance policies.
