AbstractThis study is concerned with an untouched area of truck transport in Bangkok. As there was no comprehensive information for Bangkok about the speeds of commercial vehicles and the factors affecting them, the aim was to explore the range of speeds and their variation when subject to different factors. Registration number and travel time surveys of commercial vehicles at various points in and near Bangkok city were conducted. Classification of the commercial vehicles was: pick.-ups, four-wheeled, six-wheeled, ten-wheeled trucks, and tractor-trailer combinations. Classified traffic counts were made concurrently of total traffic, classified into cars, buses and pick-ups, and commercial vehicles as four-wheeled, six-wheeled, and ten-wheeled and tractor-trailers. Motor cycles and scooters were not counted. In the traffic stream, the numbers of four-wheeled trucks and tractor-trailers were small. Four-wheeled trucks were found to be slower, and pick-ups faster, than other classes of commercial vehicles. Every road site showed different speed characteristics, therefore no generalisations could be made about commercial vehicle speeds in Bangkok. Each road must be considered· separately. Mean speeds of different classes of commercial vehicles were found generally to correlate well with each other, with traffic volumes, and with the density of signalized intersections. The with-flow bus lanes, and the ban on truck movement at certain periods of day, were both seen to affect adversely the speeds of commercial vehicles.
