AbstractTraffic congestion problems can be alleviated by improving traffic signal timings using the TRANSYT/7 method. This has been utilized for timing a network of signals at 92intersections in an area of Bangkok. The present research was concerned with 44 of these intersections which are controlled by a computer situated at the Ministry of Interior. The study dealt only with the morning peak period settings. TRANSYT input data were updated to fit the actual conditions to improve the present traffic condition. The results from TRANSYT predictions showed that with new TRANSYT signal timings, car journey speeds could be improved by 6 percent during the AM peak. BUS TRANSYT was implemented in ATC area. A comparison with the previous signal timings showed that BUS TRANSYT improved bus journey speeds and car journey speeds by 4 percent and 17 percent, respectively. These results are in agreement with the predictions made by the BUS TRANSYT simulation. The benefits derived from TRANSYT and BUS TRANSYT can be achieved at no additional cost for equipment. The only extra cost is that for data collection, running the optimizing program on the computer, and key entering onto the Micro-processor.
