AbstractThis research is an exploratory study on rural housing in Bangladesh. The survey was carried out between September and November 1979 in three villages of Mirasharai Thana, Chittagong District, in the south-eastern part of Bangladesh. The study area had been selected to be representative of typical rural areas of the country. The physical structures of rural housing and its essential components, villagers' perception and attitude towards rural housing, and the various types of dwellings were systematically studied. It was found that most of the rural dwellings were below the level of acceptance for living conditions in terms of physical structures, hygiene and sanitation requirements. to be their major problem. However, the villagers had not perceived housing They were found to be interested in improving their prevailing housing conditions on a self-help basis and contributing their own labor, without taking any housebuilding loan or undertaking any additional expenditure. The study also identified the rural housing system by dividing it into three major categories-temporary, semi-permanent and permanent-according to the structural and physical conditions. The agricultural occupation plays the most important role in determining the ownership of semi-permanent and permanent rural housing structures. This study suggests improvement of rural housing through mass education, encouragement of small-scale economic activities and the elimination of some basic defects of dwellings and their surroundings.
