AbstractThis research is an exploratory study aimed to find out the available facilities and the problems of their utilization in the rural areas of Bangladesh. Emphasis is particularly given to the disease pattern and the different kinds of services available for the villagers and the factors which affects their getting the service. The survey was carried out from September to November 1979 in Arai Hazar Thana, a district of Dacca, Bangladesh. Data on the disease pattern, causes of disease, types of available services and their utilization, the places the villagers prefer to go for treatment, the factors which affect them in getting the service, were collected and analyzed. Data revealed that most of the diseases suffered by the villagers were endemic and their awareness and poor knowledge of health care was one of the principle factors of suffering. In addition, malnutrition and unhealthy environmental conditions were also responsible. It was found that out of four types of medical facilities available in that area, villagers were mainly going to two places for treatment, thana health complex and local private allopaths. People tend to go to local allopath doctors, when they were sick more than thana health complex, which was provided free by the government, owing to the shortage of medicine supplies and insufficient numbers of doctors. Villagers had less inclination to have treatment from local healers, that is, kaviraj and hekim. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data; to find the differences in relation to health service with Finally, a model based on the findings is suggested in the 2 X test was used education and income. recommendations.
