Abstract | This is an exploratory study on education strategies to promote the development of Hill Tribes settlements in Northern Thailand. The two field surveys were conducted between September and November 1979 in Chieng Mai and Chieng Rai Provinces of Thailand. The first field survey was conducted to identify and assess the general situation and constraints of the existing educational services among six school types in the hill areas. The second field survey was conducted to obtain insights into the socio-economic and cultural conditions including problems and needs among the hill people in three clusters of villages in areas of the Hill Tribe Welfare Division, Public Welfare Department project. Finally, an alternative educational delivery model and implementation strategies are proposed. A Community - Based Education Model is proposed for further study and consideration. The model employs four main strategies as follows: 1) utilization of the existing resources and mechanisms of the PWD: the "cluster operation" approach, 2) integration of educational activities: the village-based education center, 3) mobilization of the local socio-cultural structure: the village committee approach, 4) intensification and flexibility of the educational process: the non-formal education approach. |
