AbstractThis study is an attempt towards preparation of a project design for improvement and regularization of a squatter settlement on state land in Lahore. The study starts with an inventory of all squatter settlements on state land, with one settlement being chosen as the project area. A 20% sample consisting of 154 households has been chosen using the Random table. Socio-economic and physical characteristics of the area along with the existing amenities, services as well as the preferences of the target group for improvement have been asked. a The study also gives detailed summary of regularization of squatter settlement and also finds out the dominant reason for squatting. Moreover people's willingness to contribute has been asked for and it is revealed that majority (62.1%) are willing to contribute up to 200 rupees. Chi square test has been applied for testing the preset hypothesis and results show that people are not satisfied with the existing services such as electricity and water supply arrangement. Furthermore the people want electricity and street pavement as the first priority, second priority in services and infrastructure being water and drainage. Sewerage and gas supply have been expressed as third priority. These priorities have been related with the ability to pay and existing amenities, services within the house and then a feasible plan has been prepared. Layout plans for suggested improvements have been prepared. At the end a rough cost estimate of the project has been worked out and proposals for recovery of improvement expenses have been made. It i's thus hoped that this study can be of valuable assistance to the local planners and administrators in their endeavor towards improving conditions of squatter settlements on state land.
