AbstractThis study is concerned with possible modification of the plant layout of M/s Century Textile Company Ltd., Bangkok. As materials handling costs of the plant are considered excessive by the management, improvements can probably be made by relocating some of the existing facilities. Benefits originating from any revised layout, need be compared with relocation costs of existing facilities. This has been done by modelling the plant layout problem as Quadratic Assignment Problem. Feasible and interesting solutions to this problem have been obtained with the aid of a pairwise interchange procedure named NSPIP (Natural Selection Pairwise Interchange Procedure A sensitivity analysis of the proposed solutions was carried out to observe the effects of changes in critical parameters (Economic life of plant facilities, wage increase and reliability of the revocation cost figures). This model is applicable to a large class of plant layout problems with or without minor adaptations as may be the case.
