AbstractIt is evident from the great magnitude of the cancellation and no show proportion in any hotel that a need exists for rational, scientific models for overbooking. This situation is characteristic of much of the hotel industry and, in practice, no method other than overbooking seems to have been successful in compensating for cancellation/no-show losses. Despite this need for a scientific approach, there is little literature on this subject. A model originally developed for the airlines situation has been applied to the hotel problem. But it has severe limitations which make it inaccurate in the general hotel situation. Also, increasing use is being made of computers in hotel reservation, handling. Hence, it is logical to develop a computerized reservation system with the overbooking model embedded therein, along with a reservations data base. This would provide management with an information system capable of handling the reservations and, thus, a means to make more efficient use of hotel capacity and provide better service to the clients. This research.is an attempt to develop such a computerized reservation system. A Markovian sequential decision model is developed for the overbooking situation and is included within the system. The model is applied to a case hotel with collected data and is shown to result in realistic booking levels Under sensitivity analysis the model is shown to behave predictably.
