Abstract | The primary objective of this study is to develop a SINGLE-COUNTRY model and an INTEGRATION model to analyze the consequences of economic integration for the ASEAN countries with respect to the macroeconomic variables such as balance of trade, income and investment. Both the models are multisector linear programming models which utilize the input-output relations and which distinguish between national and international sectors. The models take into account explicit transport costs and tariffs for the international trade flows. The two stages of economic integration considered in this study are the customs union and the common market. Nothwithstanding the scope and limitations of the present study, the results indicate that: economic integration does not lead to complete specialization for the ASEAN countries in the sense that capacity expansion is limited to a fewer number of sectors only; the balance of trade for Indonesia and Singapore improves with economic integration whereas that for the Philippines and Thailand worsens while that for Malaysia improves for the case of a customs union but is worse off with a common market; the total costs required in order to attain the specified rate of growth in national income for the five ASEAN countries is lower with economic integration than without it. |
