AbstractThe paper first presents a determination of the critical thermal axial force and the critical temperature increases in a railroad track in vertical direction. A vertical buckling configuration is assumed to consist of two regions. One is a lift-off region where a part of thermal expansions are released and results in a reduction of axial force. The other is a region with friction force due to ballast resistance to axial displacements of the track. According to this assumption, the post-buckling configurations are determinate. In the lift-off region, some of the horizontal resistance due to ballast is eliminated and the horizontal critical load is reduced accordingly. Once the horizontal critical load b.ecol!).es lower than vertical one, the horizontal buckling configuration will start suddenly. In order to simplify the problem, the solution is derived by using the energy method The vertical post-buckling equilibrium branch and the onset of horizontal buckling are obtained by applying the principle of minimum potential energy. It is found that the critical axial force of vertical buckling mode is influenced quite sensitively by initial imperfection, and so is horizontal buckling mode influenced by the buried depth of ties in the ballast.
