AbstractA finite element formulation capable of modelling the ultimate load range behaviour of reinforced concrete arches is presented. The nonlinear analysis is performed by using an incremental modified Newton-Raphson solution procedure. Nonlinear effects of concrete in compression, tensile cracking, crushing of concrete at ultimate state and yielding of steel reinforcements are considered. Parametric study has been made to verify the effect of the rise-span ratio, the slenderness ratio, the initial imperfection and the load parameter on the ultimate load carrying capacity of the arch. Particular attention is given to some of the numerical procedures required to implement the finite element model in the computer program. The results of some typical analyses are compared with some previous analytical and experimental results.
