AbstractOutstanding problems associated with the groundwater utilization in Bangkok area are rapidly declining water levels and the intrusion of saltwater into the aquifers. The three aquifers underlying Bangkok area namely Phra Pradaeng, Nakhon Luang and Nonthaburi are mostly utilized for the public and private water supply and have suffered from saltwater encroachment mostly in the southwestern part of the municipality. Out of these aquifers, the present study concentrates on Nakhon Luang aquifer. A model has been developed combing, two dimensional hydrodynamic model and two dimensional convective diffusion model for simulating salt-water movement in the aquifer. The developed model has been calibrated and applied for different pumping schemes to study the future response of the aquifer and the resulting salt water movement. It has been concluded that pumping from this aquifer should be reduced or at least maintained at the present level to prevent from possible groundwater mining and water quality deterioration in near future.
