AbstractAn attempt has been made to calibrate the mathematical model of the Chao Phraya river and flood plain considering the flood flow data from the 1st of September to 5th of November 1978. This mathematical model has been developed earlier in the research project entitled "Hydrodynamic Model s of the Chao Phraya River system" in 1978. More recent river cross-sectional data and the information on the flood plain inundation surveyed in 1978 have been in corporates in the model calibration. The results of the calibration on the flood flow simulation are found to be satisfactory. The model characteristics determined are the Manning roughness coefficient for the main channel and berms, the weir coefficients of the river banks, the pond storages. These model characteristics are found to be similar to those determined in the previous calibration presented in the mentioned reach in which the flood flow data in 1970 and 1975 were considered. The extents of each flood plain of the Chao Phraya River near Lop Buri, Ayutthaya and Bang Sai as well as the initial flood plain volumes are also determined through the use of the inundation map.
