AbstractThe purpose of this study is to find out the power potential of the existing irrigation reservoir systems, particularly for the lampao reservoir in Thailand. It had been observed that a large amount of water is being wasted as spills and river releases for flood control . The wastage is reduced by installing power plants. Estimated monthly inflows using rainfall runoff relationship for about 44 years are the input in this study. The simulation technique (as a tool to analyze the reservoir) is used t o study the behavior of the system elements while a constant turbine flow is taken for power generation. The priority is given to irrigation and the system response is observed, mainly the irrigation deficiency. The quantity based reliability, obtained from the simulation model have been checked for the l imitations or the acceptability. The flow for the low capacity power plant is selected and designed, based on the above considerations. Furthermore, a micro hydro power plant (< 1000 KW) is proposed for installation at the RMC outlet works, making use of the released irrigation water for RMC areas. The economy of these power plants are considered and it is concluded that it is feasible to carry out the project in the technical and economical point of view.
