Abstract | Bangkok Metropolitan has a serious problem of piezometric level ,declining. If the present rate of pumping continues, the city is going to face an acute shortage of_ groundwater which is· a major source of its water supply. The cause is mainly due to heavy withdrawal of ground water for public water supply and also by private enterprises such as :· industries, hotels, housing estates etc. Out of the eight aquifers which underlie Bangkok area, the present study concentrates on Phra Pradaeng and Nonthaburi Aquifers. A two dimensional confined flow model was applied to simulate the unsteady behaviours of those two aquifers. Historical water level maps were reproduced to a practical degree of matchability when estimated pumpage was impressed on the system with appropriate distribution. Also some comparisons of piezometric level were made along several sections. Then the performances of Phra Pradaeng and Nonthaburi Aquifers were evaluated with the help of the model for several pumpage schemes. Through this study, it is· found that the Piezometric levels of Bangkok area decline below the deepest pump setting in Nonthaburi Aquifer by the year 1985. So it is very important for MWWA to shift the groundwater over to the surface water as raw water source. Also 'current well design practices should take care of declining water· levels in designing the length of surf ace casing· which determines the lowest pump setting and hence the useful service life of wells. |
