AbstractThe purpose of this study is to investigate the infiltration rate in relation to the slopes and inflow rates, where the slopes varied from 1% to 15% and the inflow rates varied from 100 cm3/min to 700 cm3/min, respectively. The experiment was carried out on one soil type only. It was assumed that soil conditions were constant and that erosion did not occur throughout the whole experiments. It was found that under the constant rate of inflow, the infiltration characteristics among various slopes were not much different. Moreover, it was found that the inflow rate is the main factor affecting the characteristics of infiltration. The slope type infiltrometer used in this experiment provided useful data of advance function. The obtained infiltration data were analyzed with four infiltration equations, namely, Wu, Singh and Chauhan, Christiansen et al. and a simple equation developed for this study. Wu's equation was found to give best estimate of overland flow infiltration. Cylinder infiltrometer gave lower infiltration rates at same slopes and hence can be considered as giving the lower boundary of the family of overland flow infiltration curves.
