Abstract | The presence of iron and manganese in water supply posed various problems to the water treatment engineer. A study on the pretreatment of water containing iron and manganese was made using a horizontal-flow filter with crushed stones as the filter media. A regression analysis was made to determine the factor/factors affecting the prefilter performance. From the result of the study, the length of the filter was found to be the most important factor for the removal of iron from the groundwater. The removal of manganese is affected by the contact area of the crushed stones and the contact time, i.e., the greater is the contact area of the crushed stones and the longer is the contact time, the higher will be the removal of manganese. At the filtration rate of 0.40 m3 /m2-h, the removal of iron and manganese was determined. Iron with the average concentration of 1.24 mg/l can be removed to an extent of 47 percent. Manganese which has the average concentration of 1.9 mg/l was completely removed during the filtration process. The run of the filter, however, was not determined since this requires a long term study. |
