AbstractThe extent of mixing in a partially mixed activated sludge process can be defined as flow exchange ratio a . If the mixing pattern in the aerator is known, it is possible to predict the efficiency of substrate removal. The objective of this research was to collect some experimental data which are helpful in understanding the behaviour of the process under partially mixed conditions. Traces study was conducted to find the response of the system to an impulse input and to find out the value of a e under different conditions. Response of the system is fairly close to the one predicted by the equations. A modified and simple model is presented to ascertain the value of flow exchange ration, a e .
